Test and Measurement

Test and measurement that proves your hardware works in the real world, not just on paper

Precision instrumentation and expert analysis to characterise your design, expose its margins, and validate it against the specification before it goes to production.

Part of every full design project, and also available on its own when a prototype is failing and you need to know why.

Why it matters

A design that works on paper is not yet a product that works in the real world.

Proper characterisation reveals how a circuit actually performs under real conditions, exposes the failure modes a schematic cannot show, and validates compliance against the specification. I measure margins, not just a pass-or-fail stamp, so you know how much headroom exists before a limit is crossed. That is what lets you predict reliability and decide with confidence whether to change the design or release it to production. This includes prototype board bring-up: powering a new board for the first time, proving each rail and interface in turn, and turning a blank prototype into a known-good, validated unit.

What you get

Data you can act on, not just a verdict

Every engagement is delivered as measured results with the conditions and the analysis, so you leave with evidence rather than opinion.

Test plan

Documented test procedures covering all the critical specifications and operating conditions.

Measurement data

Raw data files and processed results for every measurement taken.

Test report

A comprehensive report with annotated waveforms, charts, and analysis.

Thermal analysis

Thermal images showing heat distribution under operating conditions.

RF characterisation

S-parameters, radiation patterns, and spectrum measurements.

Power analysis

Efficiency curves, transient response, and power consumption profiles.

Recommendations

An engineering assessment with suggestions for improvement where issues are found.

What testing catches

The problems bench testing misses

Thorough characterisation surfaces the issues that only appear under real conditions, at the extremes, or over time.

Temperature sensitivity

Circuits that work at room temperature but fail at temperature extremes.

Load regulation

Power supplies that droop excessively under maximum load.

Signal integrity

Ringing, overshoot, or timing violations not visible without proper probing.

EMC issues

Radiated emissions or susceptibility problems.

Thermal runaway

Components that overheat under sustained operation.

Marginal timing

Communication interfaces that work most of the time but occasionally fail.

How it works

From specification to measured results

1

Test planning

I review the specifications and define the test procedures, identifying the critical parameters, test conditions, and acceptance criteria.

2

Setup

I configure the equipment and build any fixtures or adapters needed, then verify calibration and measurement accuracy.

3

Execution

I run the measurements to the plan and document every result with screenshots, data files, and annotations.

4

Analysis

I compare the results against the specification and flag any failures, marginal results, or behaviour that needs investigation.

5

Reporting

I prepare the report with results, analysis, and recommendations, and deliver the data files for your records.

Questions

Frequently asked

What measurement capability do you have?

A working lab with oscilloscopes, spectrum and network analysers, thermal imaging and environmental chambers, used to characterise and debug real hardware.

When would I need this service?

When a board behaves unexpectedly, needs characterising against a spec, or has to be verified over temperature and environment before production.

Do you provide a report?

Yes. Measured results with the conditions and conclusions, so you can act on real data.

Can this be combined with a design or review?

Yes. Measurement is most useful when tied to fixing the design, which is something I can do in the same engagement.

Do you do prototype board bring-up?

Yes. Prototype board bring-up and hardware validation are core work: powering a new board safely for the first time, verifying each rail, clock, and interface in turn, and characterising the design against its requirements so you know exactly what works before the next build.
